The Drinks That Work Against Your Teeth (and the One That Works For Them)

The Drinks That Work Against Your Teeth (and the One That Works For Them) - SmileSip USA

October is National Dental Hygiene Month, which makes it a good time to ask one simple question: what are you drinking right now? And while you're thinking, what's in your kids' cup or water bottle?

This isn't a guilt trip. You have enough to think about already. Think of it as an opportunity to make a sip switch.

The short version

  • Enamel starts to soften below about pH 5.5, and most everyday drinks sit well below it.
  • How often you sip matters as much as what you sip.
  • Switch one acidic or sugary drink a day for water or a pH-neutral SmileSip.

How drinks affect your teeth

Your tooth enamel is incredibly strong, but it isn't invincible. When the environment in your mouth drops below roughly pH 5.5, enamel can begin to soften and become more vulnerable to mineral loss. That matters because many everyday drinks are acidic.

Saliva is your mouth's own defense system. It naturally fights bacteria, viruses and fungi using proteins like lysozyme and antibodies, washes away food debris, and dilutes acids to bring your mouth back toward a neutral pH.

But saliva needs two things: hydration and time. Sipping on acidic drinks all day gives it neither.

Then there's sugar. The bacteria in your mouth use sugar and fermentable carbohydrates to produce acids. So a sugary, acidic drink is a one-two punch: acid from the drink itself, followed by more acid from oral bacteria.

How everyday drinks compare

pH scale of common drinks: soda about 2.5, orange juice about 3, coffee about 5, club soda 5 to 6, sparkling water about 5, flat water 7.0 neutral

Drink Typical pH Sugar
Soda ~2.5 High
Orange juice ~3.0 Natural sugar
Coffee ~5.0 None until you add it
Sparkling water ~5 None
Flat water 7.0 None
SmileSip Neutral Sugar-free

Typical values from the chart above. Brands and recipes vary.

Soda, energy drinks, juice, carbonated water, coffee, tea and sports drinks are all common offenders. The takeaway is not to avoid them. It's to be aware, and to remember that frequency matters.

There's a difference between enjoying a soda or tea with a meal and slowly sipping a Trenta iced coffee from your commute until lunch.

Take the Sip Switch Challenge this October

In honor of National Dental Hygiene Month, we're keeping this simple. Start small, look at what's in your cup, then make one daily switch.

1Pick the drink you reach for most. The afternoon soda. The sports drink after Pilates. That second flavored coffee. The gas station impulse buy at 3 p.m. because you're tired, thirsty and just need something.

2Mix a SmileSip into your water instead. Tear a stick, stir it into 7 to 10 oz of water, sip.

3Do it once a day. No diet overhaul. No going without. No complicated new wellness routine.

One less sugary or acidic drink. One more bottle of water. One choice that fits into the life you're already living. Your smile doesn't only need you at the bathroom sink. Support it in all of life's in-between moments with SmileSip.
